Blood components

The veterinarian should use reagent test strips or tablets when trying to determine if blood is in the urine. RBCs, or red blood cells, are visible under a microscope. In addition, the animal should be subjected to an examination, as the microscope provides no explanation for blood’s presence within the urine. The veterinarian should take into account the animal’s medical history and current presentation in seeking an identifiable cause for hematuria. The veterinarian will often require a new sample to further assess the urine for leukocytes. This sample should also be analyzed with a microscope. The use of leukocyte test pads is not recommended, as these pads will frequently result in a false-positive in cats and a false-negative in dogs. Hematuria is a condition that gives the urine a reddish-to-black cloudy tint, indicating the presence of intact RBCs. Hemoglobinuria gives urine a brown or black tint, indicating the presence of free Hb in the urine.
